  7.    This release of the GIFKIT contains GIFLS, GIFSTRIP, and GIFCOLOR, three
  8. utilities for the analysis and manipulation of GIF files which I wrote
  9. originally because I needed them.  Since then, I have polished them 
  10. sufficiently for release.

  12.    THESE PROGRAMS ARE NOT PUBLIC DOMAIN.  THEY ARE SHAREWARE.  You may use
  13. them with no obligation for a week; thereafter, you should register with
  14. me for a nominal fee ($5.00).  The GIFKIT may be distributed freely so long
  15. as it is not modified.  There is no warranty on these programs. They
  16. and any associated documentation are provided strictly as-is.

  18.    These programs are written in C.  Hardware- and OS-dependent routines are
  19. isolated in separate files.  Hence, these programs are reasonably portable.
  20. Source code will be released ONLY to registered users under the following
  21. conditions:
  22.  
  23.    1) if the user wishes to port the GIFKIT to another platform. Source
  24. code for MS-DOS and UNIX systems is already available. In this case, the
  25. user should be prepared to give me a copy of the new source once the port
  26. is completed.

  28.    2) if any of the programs in GIFKIT fails on hardware that is supposedly
  29. compatible with platforms already supported. [Don't laugh -- this happened
  30. to me. Somebody's program worked on all CGA clones but crashed on my true
  31. IBM CGA.]

  33.    In circumstances other than these, I would prefer to do any and all
  34. modifications of the programs myself. If I'm going to be blamed for mistakes
  35. in these programs, I'd like the mistakes to be mine. However, if you think
  36. you have a good reason for wanting the source code, talk to me about it.
